The biggest local-search lever

And then there's your Google Business Profile.

Most contractors set up their GBP, fill in the name, the hours, the phone, upload a logo, and call it done. That's the floor — not the ceiling. The contractors who dominate local search are doing 7 things every week.

What winners are actually doing on GBP

  • Weekly posts — updates, offers, jobs you just finished. Google rewards activity.
  • Fresh photos every week — geotagged, of real jobs. Not stock images. Not your truck.
  • Every service listed individually — with descriptions, not a generic "we do roofs" line.
  • Q&A section seeded — you ask the questions and answer them yourself. Most contractors leave this empty.
  • Products section used — even for service businesses. It's an extra ranking surface.
  • Every attribute checked — wheelchair accessible, women-owned, free estimates. Each one is a filter customers use.
  • Reviews answered within 24 hours — every single one, good or bad. Google watches response rate.

That's roughly 3–5 hours of work every week, forever. Skip a week and you slide. Skip a month and competitors who didn't skip leapfrog you.

Most contractors don't have those 3–5 hours. That's why most contractor GBPs look identical and rank in roughly the same order they were claimed in.
